چکیده

Choosing good error metrics for this task is challenging. We will use the geometric mean of six error metrics: two for shape, one for illumination, one for shading, one for reflectance, and the MIT intrinsic images error metric introduced in [4], which we will refer to as RS-MSE (though which the original authors call “LMSE”). We use the geometric mean of these metrics as it is insensitive to the different dynamic ranges of the constituent error metrics, and is difficult to trivially minimize in practice. Our first shape error metric is:

Toward Global and Model based Multiview Stereo Methods for Shape and Reflectance Estimation

In this paper, we present a variational method that recovers both the shape and the reflectance of the Lambertian scene using multiple images. Although we consider only Lambertian surfaces in this paper, the proposed method, which is global and completely model based, is the first and unavoidable stage for reaching a shape and reflectance estimation method for non-Lambertian surfaces. Basically...

Color Constancy, Intrinsic Images, and Shape Estimation

We present SIRFS (shape, illumination, and reflectance from shading), the first unified model for recovering shape, chromatic illumination, and reflectance from a single image. Our model is an extension of our previous work [1], which addressed the achromatic version of this problem. Dealing with color requires a modified problem formulation, novel priors on reflectance and illumination, and a ...

Local luminance amplitude modulates the interpretation of shape-from-shading in textured surfaces

The pattern of illumination on an undulating surface can be used to infer its 3-D form (shape-from-shading). But the recovery of shape would be invalid if the luminance changes actually arose from changes in reflectance. So how does vision distinguish variation in illumination from variation in reflectance to avoid illusory depth? When a corrugated surface is painted with an albedo texture, the...

Illumination Decomposition for Material Recoloringith Consistent Interreflections

Changing the color of an object is a basic image editing operation, but a high quality result must also preserve natural shading. A common approach is to first compute reflectance and illumination intrinsic images. Reflectances can then be edited independently, and recomposed with the illumination. However, manipulating only the reflectance color does not account for diffuse interreflections, a...

Shape-from-shading Driven 3D Morphable Models for Illumination Insensitive Face Recognition

In this paper we present a method for face shape and albedo estimation which uses a morphable model in conjunction with non-Lambertian shape-from-shading. We use surface normal and albedo estimates to construct a spherical harmonic basis which can be used generatively to model face appearance variation under arbitrarily complex illumination. This allows us to perform illumination insensitive fa...
